If you start with a 747-400 freighter and make it bigger, you can get an airplane with 300 percent more capacity than the original. Boeing will use three of the Large Cargo Freighters to "transport major assemblies for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner." Evergreen Aviation Technologies will make the modifications.
More pictures and a complete description of the program are available from this Boeing news release.
The Car Connection and Jalopnik report that ZAP has ordered 1.0 billion $US of Smart minicars from DaimlerChrysler -- 76,500 vehicles -- for which ZAP claims to have dealer orders. What does ZAP know that DCX didn't when they decided that selling Smart cars in the US was a money loser? Will DCX ship the cars?
Most important, did ZAP send a check with the order? Right now, we have a paper pyramid of dealer agreements, conditional purchase orders and PR releases but nobody's flashing any green. A billion is a lot of dollars.
"DaimlerChrysler's Smart says not aware of any 1 bln usd order from Zap. Smart has a policy of not selling its cars to any independent importers."
Smoke and mirrors. Mostly smoke. Smoke's cheap.
Update: ZAP claims to have ordered 76,500 vehicles. BMW's MINI USA reported sales of 36,032 cars in 2004 and 36,010 in 2003. Everyone who thinks Smart cars will outsell Minis two to one, raise your hand. That's what I thought.
One set of Greens tells us that we're exhausting our limited supply of fossil fuels by burning them in gasoline and diesel engines, coal, oil and gas fired electric generators, kerosene driven jet airplanes and other "powerful" inventions that make life easy and fun. And, we are raising atmospheric CO2 to dangerous levels. Levels that will turn planet earth into a greenhouse with no fans to let the heat out. So why is another set of Greens, Green Air Products, selling boxes that do nothing more than "burn carbonaceous fuels such as propane or natural gas" not for heat, not for light, not for transport, but to release more CO2?
Some greenhouse operators believe that pouring extra CO2 into their glass covered farms stimulates plant growth. So they turn hydrocarbons into ... hydrocarbons. Propane into poinsettias. CNG into cucumbers. Maybe all our CO2 spewing SUVs, minivans and $1,800 Kalamazoo Sculpture Series II Stainless Steel Gourmet Grills will help grow more wheat, rice and soybeans in Greenhouse Earth.
PitPass asked how F1 could make qualifying such a pig's ear. The format has been changed back to one lap on Saturday in race trim (fuel and tires). Not yet a silk purse, but they've given the pig back his ear.
Joe Wilcox of Jupiter Research says that "enthusiasts are the best marketers" in his Microsoft Monitor Weblog. He's talking about software but it certainly applies to cars and motorcycles. Ducati and Harley Davidson do this better than anybody but Its not used much by other brands.
Harley Riding Stories: "Read these true stories from women who made the decision to become Harley-Davidson riders."
Desmo Women: "This is the story of one girl and her first motorcycle, her first love, a red Monster 400cc."
Stories give people a reason to visit your website over and over again. And give you an opportunity to sell them something. Over and over again.
"The 23-year-old [Danica] Patrick flew to New York with [Tony] Kanaan on Sunday night — the other 31 drivers arrived together Monday morning — and by the time she appeared on her boss’ talk show, “Late Night with David Letterman,” Patrick completed about 25 interviews in 18 hours.
