I once worked with a physician from Poland who couldn't understand why Americans drove big soft cars. Then he took a month long trip around the US. Coast to coast and top to bottom. "Now I know why you drive such big cars. Its a big country!"
Today's Wall Street Journal tells of a Volkswagen engineer who spent a year and a half in the US learning about VW's American customers.
"If you lose your car here, you're done," Mr. Jagodzinski says. "I was surprised by the amount of time people spent in their cars."
"In Germany, it's all about driving, but here, it's about everything but driving," says VW designer Reto Brun. "People here want to use their time in other ways, like talk on their cellphone."
If you're lucky enough to visit the LA auto show this week, you can see the results -- a three wheeler. I guess its going to take more than 18 months to come up with something salable.
